How To Perform a Field Pressure Test For Plumbing?

Step-by-step guide to hydrostatic pressure testing of PPRC pipelines: preparation, procedure, and evaluation criteria.

After the piping is completed, the most critical process to be performed before closing the walls is the hydrostatic pressure test. This test is both a technical obligation and a legal assurance. For the contractor or plumber, the test certificate included in the delivery report determines the limit of liability against leakage claims that may occur in the future.

Despite this, in the vast majority of construction projects in Türkiye, pressure testing is either not performed at all or in insufficient time with an inadequate measuring instrument. This guide explains step by step how to perform an accurate hydrostatic pressure test.

What is Hydrostatic Pressure Test and Why is it Necessary?

Hydrostatic pressure test is the application of pressure above the operating pressure for a certain period of time by filling the pipe system with water and measuring whether there is a pressure drop during this period. Since water is incompressible, any leakage point can be instantly read on the manometer as a pressure drop.

Why is it important?

  • Security:A leak not detected prior to delivery may occur months after the walls are sealed; It causes coating damage, moisture problems and structure damage.
  • Legal protection:The test certificate included in the delivery report limits the liability of the contractor or plumber. In a project delivered without testing, there is a risk that the losses will be transferred entirely to the contractor.
  • Quality verification:Joints that do not appear to be problematic during the welding process but have the potential for microleakage only appear under pressure.

Legal and Standard Framework

The main reference standards for piping in Türkiye are:

  • TS EN 806-4:Domestic water installation pressure test procedures
  • DVS 2207-11:PPR/PPRC pipe systems welding and testing standards (sourced in Germany, also referenced in Türkiye)
  • TS 11899:General requirements for plastic piping systems

Compliance with the test parameters of these standards is mandatory in both technical assurance and official projects.

Required Equipment

Equipment required for an accurate hydrostatic test:

  • Manual or electric test pressure pump:Must be able to gradually increase pressure.See Eral Makina test pressure pump series.
  • High precision manometer:It must have a sensitivity of 0.1 bar and a measurement range that can read up to twice the test range.
  • End plug set:To close all open ends of the line under test.
  • Valve and by-pass connection:To isolate the system and connect the test pump.
  • Test report form:For recording date, pressure value, time and result.

Pre-Test Preparation Steps

Things to do before starting the test:

  • Isolation of the system:Make the line to be tested independent from other circuits (water tank, boiler, network). All valves must be closed.
  • Closing all ends:Connectors, taps and equipment outlets must be closed with blind plugs. It is critical to leave no leakage points.
  • Resource waiting time:At least 30 minutes - preferably 2 hours - must have passed since the last welding joint. Fresh combinations may not have reached full crystallization.
  • System filling and air purging:Slowly fill the system with water. Vent air from the highest point to avoid air pockets. The measurement is reliable in a completely water-filled system.

How to Calculate Test Pressure?

The test pressure must be at least 1.5 times the operating pressure. Mains water pressure in Türkiye is generally between 3 and 6 bars. Accordingly:

  • 4 bar operating pressure → 6 bar test pressure
  • 6 bar operating pressure → 9 bar test pressure

In high-rise buildings, hydrostatic load should be taken into account. A height difference of 10 meters creates a difference of approximately 1 bar. For this reason, on the ground floor of a 20-storey building, separate test areas should be defined for the ground floor and separate test areas for the upper floors.

Maximum test pressure limit for PPRC PN20 pipe:Usually 20 bar (at 20°C). However, in long-term pressure tests it is recommended not to exceed 75% of the PN limit; In other words, it carries systematic risks above 15 bars.

Testing Procedure — Step by Step

  • Step 1:Fill the system completely with water and bleed air. Watch the pressure gauge; The pressure should be close to zero and constant.
  • Step 2:Increase the pressure gradually with the test pump — 0.5–1 bar per minute is ideal. A sudden increase in pressure can burst microcracks or weak joints; this is dangerous.
  • Step 3:Stop the pump when the target test pressure is reached. Wait for the pressure in the system to stabilize with its own dynamics (2–3 minutes).
  • Step 4:The waiting period begins. Minimum 30 minutes according to DVS 2207; Minimum 30 minutes according to TS EN 806-4. For long projects, waiting for 1 hour should be preferred.
  • Step 5:Record the manometer value at the end of the waiting. Calculate the amount of decrease based on the initial value.

Success and Failure Criteria

According to TS EN 806-4, after 30 minutes of waiting:

  • Drop at 0.2 bar and below:The test is successful. This value covers normal thermal expansion that may result from water temperature change.
  • 0.2–0.6 bar drop:Suspicious. It may be a leak or it may be caused by air bubbles in the pipe. Extend the test (60 minutes) and continue observation.
  • Drop of 0.6 bar and above:Test failed. There is a leak, it needs to be localized and eliminated.

Leak Localization

When the test fails, identify the leak point before evacuating the system:

  • Visually inspect the joints — look for wet marks or drips.
  • Try detecting an air leak using a wet cloth or foam spray in a pressurized system (very careful at high pressure).
  • Divide the system into zones: each zone is tested separately to narrow down the problem area.

When the leak point is detected, cut the relevant pipe joint andwith pipe welding setrecompile high quality. Once the repair is completed, repeat the test from the beginning.

Documentation and Record

Whether the test is successful or not, each test must be documented with the following information:

  • Test date and time
  • ambient temperature
  • Zone or line tested
  • Applied test pressure
  • waiting time
  • Starting and ending manometer values
  • Test result (pass/fail)
  • Signatures (executor and customer representative, if any)

This report should be attached to the delivery document and kept in the project file. It serves as primary evidence in case of possible disputes. With our technical supportYou can request the standardized report form by contacting us.

Test Parameters in Different Installation Types

Pressure test parameters of each installation type are different. Special cases that should not be confused:

  • Cold water installation (mains connected):Test pressure minimum 9 bar or 1.5 times the operating pressure (whichever is greater). Waiting time is 30 minutes.
  • Hot water and heating installation:Test pressure 6 bar or 1.5 times the operating pressure. Polypropylene is more rigid when the system temperature is lower than normal; expansion is less. Test high-temperature systems at room temperature.
  • Embedded floor installation:In these systems, testing must be done before the plate. The slab cannot be poured without the test being successful. Extend waiting time: 1 hour minimum.
  • Underfloor heating circuits:6 bar test pressure standard; However, it may vary depending on circuit length and pump capacity. Consult the manufacturer's manual.

Pressure Testing Strategy in Multi-Storey Buildings

Static pressure load is an important factor in multi-storey buildings. A 10-meter mass of water creates a pressure of approximately 1 bar. Therefore, in a 20-storey building, the operating pressure on the ground floor can reach a high value with the additional static load to the network pressure of the upper floors.

Good engineering practice in the installation project of these buildings requires the following approach:

  • Separate pressure regulation zone for every 5–8 floors
  • Independent test application for each region
  • Use of special high pressure class pipe (PN25) for low static pressure on lower floors

Test Documentation with Digital Recording Systems

Digital documentation is becoming increasingly mandatory in modern construction projects. Using digital tools for pressure testing provides the following benefits:

  • Time-stamped manometer records — unmanipulable evidence
  • Documenting the test moment with photo and video recordings
  • Official test report in PDF
  • Archiving integrated with the project file

With simple applications (tablet or phone), any plumber can document at this level. In large projects, special test recording software may be preferred.

Conclusion: Test Culture is the Cornerstone of Installation Quality

Pressure test is the concrete expression of installation quality. It's the only way to offer assurance through measurement and documentation, beyond just telling the customer "I did okay." Plumbers and contractors who adopt this culture differ from their competitors both in terms of reputation and legal assurance.

  • Underfloor heating circuits:6 bar test pressure standard; Consult the manufacturer's manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who should perform the pressure test?It must be done by the party performing the installation. In large projects, it is preferred to be carried out under the supervision of an independent technical supervisor.
  • Should fixtures be installed during testing? No. Fittings and valves should be removed or bypassed before testing.
  • What does it mean if the pressure rises? If the system temperature is high, the heated water may expand; This is normal behavior. The sustained increase should raise suspicion.

Manometer Selection and Calibration

The reliability of the pressure test result directly depends on the sensitivity of the manometer used. An inadequately accurate pressure gauge may hide a real leak or indicate a problem that does not exist.

Criteria for choosing the right manometer:

  • Measuring range:It must have an upper measurement limit of at most twice the test pressure. Manometers with too large apertures reduce accuracy.
  • Sensitivity class:Class 1.6 or higher is recommended; This means 1.6% full scale accuracy. It provides an accuracy of 0.16 bar within a 10 bar measurement range.
  • Calibrated device:The manometer should be calibrated at least once a year and the calibration date should be visible on the device.
  • Filled (glycerin) manometer:Glycerin-filled manometers provide more stable readings in vibrating environments.

A test performed with a manometer whose calibration date has expired may not be accepted as an official document. For professional resultsour testing equipmentyou can review.

Gaining Competitive Advantage with Testing Culture

The number of plumbers and contractors who perform and certify pressure tests in the plumbing sector in Türkiye is still a minority. This table means a strong competitive advantage for companies that adopt a testing culture.

Customers are now more conscious. A customer who sees the pressure test protocol and document in the delivery report realizes that he has purchased an installation with a low probability of complaining after delivery. This trust turns into a chain of reference customers.

Among the companies participating in tenders in large-scale projects, those that provide pressure test certificates and protocols stand out in terms of technical reliability. This document is now mandatory in some public tenders.

The equipment investment required to integrate the pressure testing culture into the company is extremely reasonable. The test pump and precision manometer are affordable even for a small-scale company. The return on this investment is both tangible (reduced complaint and compensation costs) and intangible (increase in reputation and reference customers).

New Generation Digital Testing Infrastructure

Traditional pressure testing is done with a manual manometer and stopwatch; However, technology brings transformation in this field as well. New generation digital test pumps offer features such as automatic recording with time stamp, Bluetooth data transfer and instant report generation.

The advantages of these digital systems can be listed as follows. The unmanipulable recording feature provides legal assurance for both audits and disputes. Automatic data recording eliminates human error. In multiple project management, test data for each project is collected in the central archive. A digital test certificate with a QR code can be delivered to the customer.

Although this technology has not yet become widespread in the Turkish market, its demand is rapidly increasing in large projects and corporate customers. Forward-thinking contractors and installation companies are already starting to invest in digital testing infrastructure to be prepared for this transformation.

Pressure testing culture is not only a technical practice but also shapes the perspective on the profession. Plumbers who measure, document and embody assurance; Compared to its competitors who only lay pipes, it stands out clearly in terms of both individual reputation and company value. The price of this difference is paid by customers, repeat orders and reference networks. Incorporating pressure testing into your standard practice is your ticket into this cycle of value.

Experience it on your next project; Both you and your customer will notice the difference.

A properly performed pressure test not only detects existing leaks but also prevents potential problems in the future. When the joint quality, cooling protocol and surface preparation are applied correctly, the test result is almost always successful. A failed test is a possibility for retroactive correction; The problem detected before the walls are closed means savings of thousands of liras. Maintain this habit with each delivery; Your customers notice and appreciate this trust.

Hydrostatic pressure testing is the ultimate quality assurance of plumbing projects. A test with the correct equipment, standard procedure and careful documentation numerically proves the reliability of each joint. Providing this evidence to your customer with every delivery builds trust and prevents future disputes. Adopting this basic discipline of plumbing is the most valuable investment in the profession.
